A shared degree label for flexible European engineering education and skills

Technische Universiteit Delft

The ENHANCE Alliance brings together leading European universities of technology. It focuses on shared challenges such as transdisciplinarity, sustainability, digitalisation and resilience. Students, researchers, and staff collaborate across borders.

What makes ENHANCE unique is its flexible approach to engineering education. Instead of building one standard model or joint degree, partners co-create courses, learning pathways, and solutions that fit different national systems. This allows the alliance to test new ideas in real settings and scale what works, without adding unnecessary administrative burden.

For TU Delft, ENHANCE builds on strengths in challenge-based learning and international collaboration. It offers new learning experiences and flexible pathways, enabling students to shape their own journey across Europe.

A key innovation is the ENHANCE Degree Label that recognises learning experiences across partners. It adds European value to engineering education without requiring the creation of new joint degrees.

Programme Director within ENHANCE 'The ENHANCE Degree Label helps students bring together learning from across Europe into one clear profile. It makes international experience a natural part of education, without the need for a new degree'.

The label connects (transdisciplinary) courses, pathways, and competencies developed across institutions and countries into one coherent profile for European future engineers. It creates more transparency for students, universities, and employers, and supports mutual understanding between educational systems.

As a result, international learning becomes more accessible and inclusive. Students can combine courses and short programmes within their own curriculum, without needing to spend multiple semesters abroad. At the same time, the label supports recognition across institutions and reduces structural barriers.

The ENHANCE Degree Label shows how European cooperation can move from pilots to systemic change, while remaining flexible for future needs. It contributes to a shared European approach to skills, future competencies, and learning outcomes, while respecting national differences.

To realise this potential at scale, long-term support, interoperability, and enabling frameworks at European level are essential. This will allow alliances to move beyond experimentation and embed these innovations in regular education systems. Supporting diverse approaches across alliances is key to achieving lasting impact.
